چکیده

We have investigated the eclipse of the 23-ms pulsar J0737−3039A by its 2.8-s companion PSR J0737−3039B in the recently discovered double pulsar system using data taken with the Green Bank Telescope at 820 MHz. We find that the pulsed flux density at eclipse is strongly modulated with half the periodicity of the 2.8-s pulsar. The eclipse occurs earlier and is deeper at those rotational phases of B when its magnetic axis is aligned with the line of sight than at phases when its magnetic axis is at right angles to the line of sight. This is consistent with the eclipse of A being due to synchrotron absorption by the shock-heated plasma surrounding B, the asymmetry arising from the higher plasma densities expected near B’s polar caps. Subject headings: pulsars: general — pulsars: individual (J0737−3039A, J0737−3039B) — radiation mechanisms: non-thermal — binaries: general

Fluctuation and Morphological Properties of the Pulsars in J0737–3039 System

We describe the morphological and fluctuation properties of the pulsars in the double neutron star system, PSR J0737–3039. Pulsar B is seen in almost all orbital phases, except in the range of ∼ 6◦ to 65◦. This may be interpreted as an eclipse of pulsar B’s signal by its own magnetopause region produced by interaction with pulsar A’s relativistic wind. No modulation of the emission of pulsar B ...

Se p 20 05 Eclipses and orbital modulations in binary pulsar PSR J 0737 − 3039

Binary radio pulsar system J0737−3039 provides an exceptional opportunity to study innermost structure of pulsar magnetospheres due to very tight orbit, favorable directions of pulsars' rotation and magnetic axes and extremely fortuitous orientation of the orbit. In this system the millisecond pulsar A is eclipsed once per orbit. During eclipse a clear modulation at the 2.77 s period of pulsar ...

Nature of Eclipses in Binary Pulsar J0737-3039

We consider magnetohydrodynamical interaction between relativistic pulsar wind and static magnetosphere in binary pulsar system PSR J0737-3039. We construct semi-analytical model describing the form of the interface separating the two pulsars. An assumption of vacuum dipole spin down for Pulsar B leads to eclipse duration ten times longer than observed. Electromagnetic torque on Pulsar B is, in...

Radio Emission from the Double Pulsar System J0737−3039 Revisited

The double pulsar J0737−3039 is the only known system where the relativistic wind emitted by a radio pulsar demonstrably interacts with the magnetosphere of another one. We report radio interferometric observations of the J0737−3039 system with the VLA at three wavelengths, with each observation spanning a full binary orbit. We detect J0737−3039 at 1.6 and 4.8 GHz, derive a spectral index of −2...

Pulsed X-ray Emission from Pulsar a in the Double Pulsar System

The double pulsar system J0737−3039 is not only a test bed for General Relativity and theories of gravity, but also provides a unique laboratory for probing the relativistic winds of neutron stars. Recent X-ray observations have revealed a point source at the position of PSR J0737−3039, but have failed to detect pulsations or orbital modulation. Here we report on Chandra X-ray Observatory High ...
